What Is a Marketing Funnel?
A Simple Guide to TOFU, MOFU & BOFU
Someone sees your reel, likes it, and keeps scrolling. A week later, they look for something similar and buy from another brand. Just because someone pays attention doesn’t mean they will buy.
People usually don’t make a purchase the first time they hear about a business.
They need to understand what they’re looking for, compare different choices, and feel confident before making a decision. The marketing funnel is a tool that marketers use to plan for these different stages. This guide explains how the funnel works and how TOFU, MOFU, and BOFU help shape the kind of content you create.
What Is a Marketing Funnel?
A marketing funnel maps the journey from a stranger noticing your brand to a customer buying from it. The basic path is Awareness → Consideration → Decision → Conversion. You may also hear it called a sales funnel or conversion funnel.
It is shaped like a funnel because many people enter at the top and fewer move through each stage.
Real journeys are messier. Someone might buy after one reel or return three times to compare options. Treat the funnel as a planning tool, not a strict rule.
Why It Matters
The funnel helps you understand what customers are looking for, create content that suits their needs, spend money where its most effective, and see what’s working.
A blog post and a discount banner have different purposes, so they should be evaluated in different ways.
The idea is straightforward: the right audience, the right message, the right content, the right stage in their journey, and the right call to action (CTA), which is the next step you ask someone to take.
TOFU, MOFU, and BOFU
TOFU: Top of Funnel (Awareness)
The customer has a problem or is curious but may not know your brand.
They might ask broad questions like “how do I choose a perfume?” Provide helpful, low-pressure content like educational blog posts, SEO guides, reels, and podcasts. Keep the call to action gentle: read, watch, or follow.
MOFU: Middle of Funnel (Consideration)
The customer knows they have a problem and is looking at different solutions.
Build trust with comparison articles, case studies, product guides, webinars, and email nurturing (a series of helpful emails sent over time).
BOFU: Bottom of Funnel (Conversion)
The customer is almost ready to make a decision but is still unsure.
They may be thinking, “Will it work? Is it worth the cost?” Use content like testimonials, demos, free trials, consultations, clear product pages, and offers. The content here should help reduce doubt, and the call to action should be clear and direct.
After Conversion
A purchase need not be the end. Extend the journey: Conversion → Retention → Loyalty → Advocacy. Good onboarding, support and follow-up encourage repeat purchases. Happy customers leave reviews and refer friends, which becomes TOFU content for others.
Example: Aseel Perfumes
TOFU: “How to Choose a Perfume That Matches Your Personality.” Goal: attract people exploring fragrance.
MOFU: “Oud vs Musk: Which Fragrance Is Right for You?” Goal: help them compare and see Aseel as knowledgeable.
BOFU: “Discover Aseel Oud Noir: Shop Now.” Goal: convert with a clear offer.
Common Mistakes
Asking cold audiences to buy immediately
Using the same message at every stage
Publishing content without a clear objective
Writing weak CTAs
Ignoring retention
Not measuring results
Build Your Own Funnel
Define your audience and their main problem.
Identify how aware they already are.
Create one piece of TOFU, MOFU and BOFU content.
Add a conversion mechanism, such as a booking page or checkout.
Measure each stage: visits, sign-ups, sales.
Improve the weakest stage first.
Conclusion
Effective marketing is not repeating a promotion until someone gives in. It is knowing where a customer is in their journey and offering the right information, proof and next step. A good funnel does not push people downward. It removes the questions standing between them and a confident yes.
